Art on Monday's : How I Make Faces

Hi!

Do you ever have trouble making faces??I did..I could never make a decent looking face the features used to be all random..I'm not saying I make faces like professionals now but atleast the features are where they're supposed to be and overall result seems alright.Sometimes when inspiration strikes me I've made some good looking faces.
It's a neat trick that I learned from a book that I use for making faces and here it is :

  1. Make a circle.
  2. Make a big U under the circle so that the upper points of U touch to circle.
  3. Now divide the resultant figure in 3 parts.
  4. upper part is for forehead, middle for eye, nose and cheekbones and lower part for lips and chin.
  5. Now draw a vertical line right in the middle of the O and U arrangement so to vertically divide it in two halves.
  6. now on either side of line use the 1st horizontal line that divides the top 2 parts of face and draw 2 circles on either side.
  7. from circles draw two curved lines for nose long enough to touch the lower line.
  8. inn lower half make a curved line for mouth
  9. draw your features.
  10. Refines your features.
Don't make such dark lines this is just for purposes of showing you line..try using lightest shade of pencil without applying pressure
Face lines at 3 different positions
Tips : If you're making big faces this might make it tough but when making small faces it'll make your job very easy and you don't have to define every feature very carefully and delicately when drawing small faces like in comics.
FOR MEN : Hairline in very important..Cheekbones..A bit hair on chin and upper lip if required..thicker neck and small to negligible eyelashes..eyebrows need not be very well drawn.
FOR WOMEN : Delicate features..long thin neck..no adam's apple..big eyelashes..redness on cheeks..big eyes.
FOR KIDS : Delicate features negligible hair..Big sparkling eyes that are way down the forehead..big head..small nose small mouth roundish face.

I hope that was useful..
Any idea's about next week..I mean what should I post for Monday??
Thanks.

  1. Yeah *sigh* Your's looks amazing, mine on the other hand even with your brilliant tips still looks like a three year old drew it. A three year old hyped up on sugar with a complete inability to draw. I'm terrible at giving post ideas so I won't even burden you with a whole lot of random gibberish.

    2. Drawing for dummies.A beginners guide to comic book sketches and drawing. Or a challenge. You draw something epic or strange and we have to write a poem or short story to go with it.

  4. I'm saving this for the next time I draw!
The face is the biggest problem when I'm drawing, I usually just draw an elipse and sketch the facial lines lightly so I don't screw it up. :)

    1. I also started with ellipse when I was a kid..it made making faces so easy :D
This one just helps in giving head shape a little better :D
      Rest is same :D

  5. I try (emphasis on try) to draw so I can get my characters faces down on paper for a visual aid when describing them with words. I end up with a paper torn from erasing too much and pencil smudges on my hand. I have to say that this post was VERY helpful. Although I'll never consider myself much of an artist, at least with this I think I'll come away with more than stick figures and frustration.
Maybe your next post could be on hands, those are my greatest drawing nightmare!

Trust me you only think you can't draw but you can draw..you just have to try :D

  6. This is pretty cool! I learned this once in art class, but I always forget to actually use it. :P Yeah, that might be my problem. And I am terrible at drawing noses! They always come out looking strange to me. And hands. It seems I always put their hands on backward or their fingers are too long or too stubby. I think last time I just left the hands as "leaf" hands and just left out the fingers. You can't tell much though because it's such a small picture.

These are good tips! I'll keep them in mind next time.

I try to remember it but sometimes when I feel lazy I kind of skip it..I'm terrible at legs..they usually aren't in ratio with the whole body..
Thank you glad it helped :D

  9. Thanks for sharing on how to draw the different characters. Those were really accurate and clear instructions. I've only seen these in art books as a kid, but I never got round to learning them. You must be really good at sketching the portraits of other people then. Maybe you can try observing people and giving them their portraits just for fun. They'll surely love it. :) Perhaps for the next post you can include different perspectives of the characters, like zooming in to the eyes or a particular object they're holding or other features like their body shape and size/proportions. :)

    1. I'm blushing like seriously blushing.I am not very good and I am not being modest here.I can sketch comic characters and stuff but still life and portraits is something I can't even think about doing they're way beyond me.
Your idea for next post is brilliant I think I will do that :D
Thanks for the kind words :D

  10. If I had to draw a face, you'll laugh at me. I'm horrible when it comes to drawing, seriously. I'm the one who uses just a simple circle and lines for the body, arms and legs. Original, aren't I? LOL
I like this kind of posts because even though I don't draw, it helps others to see how you work, which is pretty awesome to be honest :)

  14. At school we're currently drawing portraits and I'm kind of ok, but I am terrible at drawing faces from different angles. Anyway, it's a great guide (as Lizzie said)!

By the way, guess which box I've ticked... Notify me! ^U^

Seriously?they're teaching you to draw portraits?Nobody took art classes seriously in my school neither teachers nor students. D:
Tell me more about your art classes :D

    2. Aha only the art teachers can draw, but yeah we're being taught at the moment. At our school art is an optional subject you can take and you're basically taught techniques, history of art, perspectives and proportions. I really like it because our teacher isn't very strict when it comes to what we draw, as long as the end result is good and it fits the topic. ^^ (And I also enjoy learning about art in the past.) Your art is amazing: it frightens me how good you could be if you had taken lessons!

    3. That's kind of awesome..in my school teacher used to come tell to do this and then never bothered to help anyone out it was always assumed to be a useless subject..why bother with art when you can make students cram no good subjects D:

  15. You're so good at drawing and I'm really jealous D: I can't even draw a thing, and even until now I still draw stick figures (haha shame!!) Normally I make a huge circle and add dots on their faces, but this is awesome! :) Thanks for sharing!
